Understanding lymphoedema and the Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment we offer.

Lymphoedema Treatment

01

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Fully trained and qualified by The Lymphoedema Training Academy to provide Manual Lymphatic Drainage, a specialist massage using gentle, specific hand movements to clear the lymph vessels and encourage movement of fluid away from the affected area.

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a swelling of a part of the body due to a build-up of fluid in the skin. It commonly presents in arms and legs, but can affect any part of the body.

The swelling can be uncomfortable and unsightly, as well as restricting movement, and this has a detrimental effect on the patient's quality of life.

What to Expect at a Manual Lymphatic Drainage Session

  1. 01

    Assessment

We begin by taking a history of your condition and discussing the outcomes you'd like to achieve, assessing the swelling and taking measurements of affected and unaffected limbs.

  2. 02

    Treatment

The massage begins with relaxing deep breathing; you'll be seated comfortably and covered with a blanket, with only the area being worked on uncovered. The gentle massage lasts approximately 60 minutes.

  3. 03

    Review

Where appropriate, measurements are taken again at the end of treatment to assess any reduction in swelling.

  4. 04

    Self-Management

We'll practice a sequence of Self Lymphatic Drainage massage you can carry out at home, along with information, advice and a helpful leaflet.

Lymphoedema Questions

What Causes Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema occurs when there is a problem with the lymphatic system, which is responsible for cleansing tissues and maintaining fluid balance. If it isn't working correctly, fluid collects in the skin and oedema starts.

Who Gets Lymphoedema?

Anyone can develop lymphoedema. It is described as either Primary, a rare genetic condition, or Secondary, which is more common and results from outside influences such as surgery, cancer, injuries, infections, immobility or chronic venous insufficiency. Both types are long-term, incurable conditions.

What Can Be Done About Lymphoedema?

Early recognition and intervention are important. With assessment, regular self-treatment and lifestyle changes such as exercise, healthy diet, unrestrictive clothing, good skin care, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, compression garments and kinesio taping, the condition can be managed to allow a normal life.

Where Can I Find Additional Help?

Your GP is the best first contact and can refer you to your nearest NHS Lymphoedema Clinic. Private therapists who provide Manual Lymphatic Drainage can also be found on professional registers.
